She Says - The Interview

Bob Chambers "She Says"
What made you want to record the album "She Says"?
Every musician who writes songs wants to record an album some day, I've always wanted to record my own album and make my songs as well as my voice available to the public. The fans that come to my gigs kept on asking me when I was going to have an album of my songs available to buy, so here it is.

Who were your influences?
That's hard to say really. It's easy to say that you like a particular artist's music, however, it doesn't necessarily follow that their music will influence your own style of songwriting. It would be more interesting to hear who the listener thought had influenced my music the most; but the country artists of that time who I liked a lot were: Don Williams, Johnnie Cash, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, The Oak Ridge boys and The Eagles. If you go way back to the beginning I would have to say Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Everly Brothers..the list could go on forever!

Who is "She Says" aimed at?
I would like to think that the whole of humanity would appreciate my music, I'm only human and that's what I write about - being human. Having said that I think it is quite obvious that in the main, the album is aimed at people who like country music. People who have lived a little, and maybe haven't had an easy life, but are still basically happy and contented with the way things are.

Does that mean you are aiming "She Says" at an older audience?
Well, I like to say a more mature audience - you don't have to be old to be mature, you can be young and still be mature - you can be old, and yet feel and behave like a sixteen year old. As long as you dig my music I don't care how old you are. My oldest fan is in her nineties and my youngest fan has just turned fifteen, so make what you will of that.

Why are you selling "She Says" on the Internet instead of in the shops?
It's the only way for independent artists to be seen, heard and to sell records these days, big record companies are only interested in stuff that appeals to mass markets. They can invest millions of dollars promoting their artists, with a view to getting huge returns on their investment. You can't compete with them in the shops. What gets advertised on the T.V. sells in the shops it's as simple as that. I can't afford to advertise on T.V. or radio, I can't take out a full-page ad' in music magazines etc; but I can compete for listeners on a relatively level playing field on the Internet. I can also get my music out to the entire world - something you could only dream of doing twenty years ago.

Did you write all the songs yourself?
I sure did - and I've got the scars to prove it.

Who produced "She Says"?
I did.

Which songs on "She Says" are your favourites and why? - Do you have a favourite?
That's a hard question to answer because they're all my babies and I love them all equally, but if no one's listening I will say this very quietly "I got a pair of brand new cowboy boots","She Says", "Late again", and "I'm gonna miss you when you're gone". I also like "Keep on believing" because it really says it all, "you've got to keep on believing in what you believe", if you stop believing - then you might as well not be here.

Do you play all the instruments on "She Says"?
Yes, I play all the instruments, the guitars, the keyboards and all the vocals.

Where did you learn to sing that way?
I learned to sing as I learned to write songs. In the early years of playing bass guitar in club bands, I would often be asked if I could sing backing or harmony vocals, which I did. I was always being told that I had a good voice. Recording and singing my own songs gave me more confidence as a singer, as more and more people would remark on the quality of my voice. Before I knew it I was singing lead vocals in my own band. The best way to sing a song is to sing it like you mean it. The best way to sing as though you mean it - is to mean it.

Are you going to record another album of country songs?
Yes I am going to record another album of my country songs, I'm preparing the songs now and hopefully recording them winter 2006. The album should come out early 2007.
